Embedding SCC Library Resources (for Faculty)

Instructions and ideas for embedding library resources into Canvas.

Films on Demand

You can integrate this database directly into your Canvas course (see the next tabs in this module) which makes embedding and viewing video very easy.  If you have any trouble with this, please get in touch with erin.duane@solano.edu or scclibrary@solano.edu.

To provide a link to a video in Films on Demand, click the SHARE button at the bottom of the video, then select EMBED/LINK and copy the record URL to your Canvas course.  (Note: using the EMBED code as shown below the "Record URL" in your Canvas shell will work, but will embed the MySolano authentication page first, which may be confusing to students.  To embed the video directly, see instructions on the next tab.)

Films on Demand - Share Link - Video Instructions

To install the app, click on SETTINGS in Canvas, then the APPS tab.  Search in the available apps for Films on Demand.  You should get a search result that looks like this:

Films on Demand app

Next, you'll need to configure the app by inputting the Consumer Key and Shared Secret.  You'll need to get these from a librarian.  Please email erin.duane@solano.edu or scclibrary@solano.edu.

Configuring the Films on Demand app

Click "Add App" and now Films on Demand has been installed to your Canvas instance and you should be able to directly find and embed our FoD content to your class shells; neither you nor students should have to authenticate further to view these videos in your classes.  Please get in touch if you experience otherwise.

After you've installed and configured the Films on Demand app to your canvas shell, you can use the Rich Content Editor on any Canvas page, assignment, announcement, etc, to embed.

Here are video instructions:

  1. Create a new content item that uses the Rich Text Editor: an announcement, assignment, discussion, or lecture/page.
  2. In the editor, look for the Fod icon (a red circle) - it may be hidden under a button called "More External Tools"
  3. Enter your search term(s) - if you can't find what you need, try advanced searching in our Films on Demand database and then pull that video's information back to the Canvas app
  4. Find your video, then choose your embed size from the dropdown - I also recommend copying and pasting the direct URL to the video, just in case the embed is wonky for your students.
  5. Save and Publish
