English handbooks can be your best friend! If you don't have a personal one, we have many in the library and there are also good resources online. A English handbook should include solid information on all aspects of writing, including (but not limited to): punctuation, grammar, thesis statements, building an argument and using sources. If a comment like "comma splice" on a paper makes no sense to you, an English handbook can clear it up (check the index).
Think of an English handbook as a translator between the mind of your professor and you.
Older editions have perfectly good writing advice and are cheaper and/or easier to get from the library - but be sure not to rely on outdated citation info! Check the Excelsior OWL and library resources for current citation styles.
