How to Find Works of Literature (Primary Sources)

If you're trying to locate a specific story, novel, poem, play, or other work of literature, or the writing of a certain author, here are some places to look.

  • To find works by specific authors, type the author's last name first and choose to search by author: Butler, Octavia, not Octavia Butler.
  • Use "quotes" when you're searching for a book by title, especially if it's made of ordinary words: "To Have and Have Not."
  • Search "fiction" in the subject field to limit your search to fiction works.

Older writing that is in the public domain (pre-1923) may be freely available online, and you may be able to find it with a simple web search. Example: "Why I Wrote the Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman is available on multiple websites.
